Today we went to Avignon. We have been there before but this time we thought we had better see Le Palais des Papes seeing as it is probably one of the most important landmarks in the history of Christianity. This is the palace which housed the popes during the period 1309 - 1377 when they ruled from Avignon rather than Rome due to wars in Italy. Each pope built a bit on to it which has resulted in a massive palace! It would have to be the biggest palace or castle still standing in all of Europe!
We spent the day in Avignon, arriving about 11am, parking the car in a huge carpark outside the rempart wall and catching a free shuttle (navette) into the centre ville. We had a leisurely lunch at a cafe before doing the Palais, followed by retail therapy. We bought shoes!! Pink ones, beige ones and grey gingham sneakers! While in Avignon we saw the ultimate "green building (see Photo) and they were even doing maintenance on it to ensure it met it's green targets !!
Yesterday we bought food at the market in Bedoin including a piece of sanguine which is an air dried beef (see photo today). We also bought a local chevre and a tomme cheese (see same photo).
Tonight on the way back from Avignon we stopped off at our local bar and after only 3 days we were greeted with handshakes from the patron. I am concerned that the next stage will be the 2 or 3 cheek kisses!
