Today we took the local bus to Antibes which is about 20kms south of Cagnes Sur Mer towards Cannes. The day started out cool with a strong wind blowing straight off the Med. Thankfully during the day the cloud cleared however the wind remained cool.
After wandering through the town and having lunch at a restaurant in Place Nationale (it turned out that the very gay waiter was heading to Australia for a holiday next January so he referred to us as Skippies !), we visited the Musee Picasso which is housed in the 12th century Grimaldi Castle. Picasso was offered space in the castle after WW2 and this began a period of crazed activity between mid Sept and November 1946 during which he created some of his most famous works. When he left he gave the museum all the work he had done – 24 paintings, 80 ceramics, 44 drawings, 32 lithographs, 11 oils on paper, 2 sculptures and 5 tapestries – composing one of the world’s greatest Picasso collections. There is another Musee Picasso in Paris that is well worth a visit.
During the day we discovered a shop in Antibes called St Tropez Kiwi so had to get a photo.
