It’s 8 pm and I am still sitting outside in my bikini! What a contrast from Bourgogne. We have gone from a small stone cottage beside the river , BBQing over an open fire, dresses in jumpers and jeans to a big open airey apartment overlooking the Cote d’Azur, BBQing on an electric Webber (which Chris has decided is useless as it doesn’t get hot enough to cook steak)and dressed in shorts and bikini.
This place is very Italian. The architecture feels like we have moved across the border (because the border used to include this part of the coast in Italy). Our apartment is in a village on the hill just below the Grimaldi Castle which dates back to the 1300 – 1400 ‘s. We thought the streets in Greece were like goat tracks but this beats anything we have seen before! Thankfully we don’t have a car this week as I’m not sure it would even fit up our street (We will try to get a good photo to upload)). There is a free shuttle which runs continuously from the village at the bottom of the hill to the old medieval village where we are. It barely fits around some of the corners.
Yesterday and today we spent some time at the beach (the water is freezing!!!!) and wandering the narrow streets and lanes around this area. At the top of our village there is the Grimaldi Castle and a square surrounded by very good restaurants and a petanque court where there seems to be a very serious competition going on between the locals.
Last night we wandered up the hill to a local restaurant for dinner and had a very good 3 course meal (even though the service was a bit quirky) for 17 Euros. Tomorrow we are going into Nice for a bit of commercial therapy after 2 weeks in the countryside. This could prove expensive!!
I am still looking at the real estate market and one of the photos today shows a place across from our balcony. It looks promising. Carol would you come to visit??
